Putting People
Over Insurance Profits

We fight for democratic, transparent solutions to the climate-driven insurance crisis to put people over corporate profits.

People > Profits

Communities are fed up with lawmakers putting corporations first. We need community-led and validated policy solutions that put people over corporate profits.

Equity & Justice

Communities of color and low-income communities bear the brunt of the climate and insurance crises. Solutions must advance racial, climate, housing, and economic justice.

Accountability

Insurance companies are part of the problem. We demand accountability. Policy solutions must protect our homes and address the root causes of the climate crisis.

The Problem

We are facing a home insurance crisis. Premiums are skyrocketing, and many people can’t get insurance at all. We need solutions.

About the Equitable & Just Insurance Initiative

The Equitable & Just Insurance Initiative (EJII) is a diverse and growing network of advocates, frontline groups and activists, and subject matter experts; working on housing and community development policy, consumer protection, and environmental, climate, and racial justice. We aim to develop solutions that can guide community leaders and policy advocates working together to address the insurance crisis — including its root cause.

No place is safe from the climate crisis, and the costs are mounting. Communities across the U.S. were hit by over 27 billion-dollar climate disasters in 2024 alone, hammered by more frequent and severe wildfires, hurricanes, record rainfall, and more.

Instead of withdrawing support for the fossil fuels that are causing this crisis, insurance companies are shifting the costs to consumers by raising premiums, reducing coverage, and paying out less — abandoning many climate-vulnerable communities altogether. This harms everyone, but especially exacerbates racial and economic inequality, burdening marginalized communities already disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis.

While insurance companies rake in profits and position themselves as victims, they are financing and providing coverage for fossil fuel corporations, the main drivers of climate change. U.S. insurers have nearly half a trillion invested in fossil fuels and provide the insurance coverage necessary to construct new polluting infrastructure.

Communities deserve a sustainable, equitable, and resilient path forward where insurance works for us, not against us. We need policymakers to stand up for communities and adopt policies that put people over profits and hold the insurance industry accountable.
